Contrast

Dylan Armitage

HAIKUS
Summer
School in June, bell rings
Relax, enjoy the weather
Boiling air, day spoiled
Winter
Christmas break, content
Frolic, play in the snow banks
Too cold to enjoy.

Bad
I simply don’t know
Mind only runs blank
This is a crappy haiku.
Good
Thesaurus, practice.
Five seven five, use big words
Makes a great haiku

Day
Dreams of other worlds
Shreeking noise takes it away
Alarm clock, shut up.
Night
Overly tired
Oh my lord, I need a nap.
Blankets and warm sheets.

I worry
No one confirming
my suspicions, and no one
allaying my doubts.
Satisfaction
Its a great feeling
Get exactly what you want
Wishes do come true.

Consistent
Lack consistency
You do, have my patience? You,
Certainly do not
Persistent
But, I cant help it
Inside of my head, my heart
You will never leave.

SONNETS
Failure
What would you have me doing on this day?
Thinking of rhyme, rhythm and deep meaning
Come up with something first-class? I just may
But I have no clue what I am doing

Thinking and speaking, counting syllables
Not satisfied with anything written
My work will be less than honorable
Or painful, like as if I’ve been bitten

The teacher’s face is clearly unimpressed
All the effort put in is now worthless
Put my head down, pull at hair, clearly stressed
Not an easy task, one done with finesse

I give up, I cannot write a sonnet
It is clear now that my mark will plummet

Success
Don't lose your heart if failures come with ease;
Build up courage and try again-succeed;
Let failures not disturb your mental peace;
Delayed if mirth is sure to well exceed.

Rewards may come to some in ways unknown;
Rewards may miss the truly talented;
Rewards may make a person sometimes clown;
All flowers aren't born to be well-scented.

Though failures come, our duty we must do;
Let Nature take its time and course it must;
Results could be very untoward too;
Our human eyes cannot avoid road-dust.

The patient man will soon succeed in life;
But one knows not, how long can last one's strife.

FREE FORM
Prisoner
Silence interrupted
He wakes to find himself behind bars
Alone, stranded, he panics
Unsure of what to do next

Out of options, he screams
Wailing for help
Not a sound to be found
His anger takes over, pouting.

Shouting once again
Gripping the cage
Fatigue, depression, sets in
He's been beaten, he whines.

On the floor,sobbing in defeat
nothing left to do but weep
a woman enters his chamber
here to rock the baby back to sleep.

Freedom
Birds chirping
Warm, soft air,
cool breeze encompasses
windows down, free flowing hair
no worries
up all night
memories being made
no reason to fright.
Never regretting.
Enjoy what's at hand
What summer's all about
Friends, drinks and warm sand
This is what we live for
You'll laugh, you'll cry, but never pout.
Doesn't get any better than this
This is what freedom's all about.

SOUND
Nature's Calm
Bug wings flap
Insects and bee drones
Birds tweet
Real noise, not what you'd do on your phones.
River water flows
Upstream in perfect form
Wind settles
The calm before the storm.

Tin house
Bang!Bang!Bang!
Rain falls on the in roof
Bang!Bang!Bang!
Resembling gunshots, the man's courage goes POOF!

CRASH!
Trees plummet
CRASH!
The man is scared of it

BANG!
Thunder roars
BANG!
Panic soars

JUST FOR FUN
Friends
Not the show, the real ones.
There for you when it's tough
There with you when you cry
They know when you're upset
They know when you're content
They make you cry, they make you laugh.
They cry with you
They laugh at you.
They bring out emotions you never thought you had.
They make you do things you never thought you'd do.
Not peer pressure, but just being comfortable.
The ones that you can go up to and say “I love you.”
And you know what they'll say back “ I love you too.”
The ones that will meet you at your locker and say “What's up loser?”
And you know you'll say with a smile “I hate you.”
You can say “I'll be there for you.”
And they'll say “I'll be there for you too.”
Friends are forever.
